Field Forestry Senior Officer

Konservasi Indonesia requires a qualified and motivated individual as Field Forestry Senior Officer in North Sumatra to implement various projects.

 

The role of this position is to work and collaborate with relevant organizations such as Forest Management Units (KHP), Conservancies, Batang Gadis National Park (TNBG) and Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and other relevant partners such as Watershed Management Agency (BPDAS) in protecting key natural capital areas including conservation areas, watersheds, and other critical forest areas. He is responsible for providing support to local communities for the restoration of critical forest areas in South Tapanuli and Mandailing Natal Districts through a Social Forestry approach with agroforestry activities.  Able to empower Forest Farmer Groups, through capacity building trainings of group members, strengthen management of Forest Farmer Groups, create social forestry management plans, to strengthen management plans of relevant government agencies to ensure forest sustainability in both districts. The position is also responsible for ensuring smooth implementation of activities in the field and maintaining good relations with local communities and partners.

 

The proposed location for this position is South Tapanuli, at KI's field office. This position will report to Field Forestry Coordinator. This position will work closely with other teams in the field office and KI staff in Medan and Jakarta Office.

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Engagement and collaboration with local communities and government agencies, organizations, local communities and other stakeholders, for the implementation of programs to protect important forest areas that have high biodiversity, restoration activities in forest areas through social forestry approaches with forest farmer groups, and also restoration of peat areas that have already been cleared for plantations.

-        Carrying out all stages of implementing forest and land rehabilitation activities, such as: in collaboration with the GIS section preparing the final land coverage map material from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, a map of the level of erosion hazard. permit maps (PIAPS, PIPPIB, etc.) area boundary maps, area function maps, area zoning maps, RPHJP maps, high-resolution satellite images, map analysis and identification, biophysical identification, social, economic and cultural identification, boundary/boundary erection blocks, division of plots, creation of restoration area maps, and preparation of restoration activity plans and budgets.

-        Lead the dissemination of the implementation of restoration activities to community leaders, religions and forest farmer groups, and develop participatory pattern agreements in implementing restoration activities.

-        Carry out activities to empower forest farmer groups to increase knowledge, skills and change attitudes through Forest Field Schools, so they are able to carry out restoration activities in the field.

-        Prepare nurseries of various kinds of fruit and tree seedlings with forest farmer groups, to be planted in restoration areas. And procure seeds from outside to meet the needs of seeds in the restoration area.

-        Organizing and leading members of forest farmer groups to plant seeds in their respective plots of land

-        organizing and leading members of forest farmer groups to carry out plant maintenance on their respective plots of land, as well as monitoring other forest farmer groups that have carried out restoration activities.

-        Make a procurement plan for all materials and tools needed for restoration activities.

       Support the team to collect biodiversity data and analysis in monitoring biodiversity in the Batang Toru Protected Forest area, Batang Angkola and TNBG.

       Identification of innovative solutions to current and emerging threats to critical habitats and species in program areas through the provision of policy and advocacy materials.

       Maintaining key stakeholder networks and relationships to support the effective implementation of the Restoration and Area Protection program. Participate in respective stakeholder meetings and workshops.

       Report to stakeholders as needed, including regular monthly project progress reports; and other written articles and publications from interesting findings/stories from the field.

       Maintain good relations and coordination with other team members and represent KI in other potential activities, as well as carry out other tasks as needed.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·       S1 degree preferred in forestry, Agriculture, landscape or natural resources management related science with at least 2 years of experience on forestry and sustainable development, preferably in Sumatra.

·       Understanding of forestry and development issues at regional level.

·       Ability to work and communicate effectively in cross-cultural situations with a wide range of people in both the public.

·       Flair for diplomacy; negotiation, mediation, conflict resolution, negotiating, develop networking and facilitation skills at all levels.

·       Proven record of success as part of interdisciplinary conservation project teams and self-motivated with the drive and determination to succeed and well-developed interpersonal and team working.

·       Willingness to travel and work long hours, occasionally to remote areas and working on weekends or after hours if needed.

·       Good communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English (preferably)

·       Computer literacy with experiences in electronic communications (i.e. E-mail, Internet, etc.) as a user including a proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

       Experienced working with BKSDA, FMU (KPH) and national park management units

       Demonstrated and proven commitment to protection and conservation of natural resources.

       Demonstrated and proven ability to produce tangible results, prioritize tasks and develop timelines for project completion work independently, ability to complete tasks in a timely fashion, defining goals and deliverables, and delivering products.

       Ability contribute to the efficient and effective operation of the project and to positively influence the team work and to adapt to changes in work load and positively influence the project team and able to work under pressure and with multiple deadlines

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

       Ability to work an irregular schedule including weekends, travel extensively and on short notice, when required.

       Ability to work in a remote location for periods of time, when required

       Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain
