The Zoological Society of London
is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on
science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for
about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial
development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL Indonesia is based in Bogor,
West Java, with existing field projects in
Jambi and South Sumatera. We
are now looking
for:
ZSL Indonesia is a highly diverse
programme with projects involving climate change, public-private-people
partnerships, sustainable landscape management, in addition to species
conservation (namely the Sumatran tiger), protected area management, and
combatting wildlife crime.
The
UKCCU/NICFI Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and
district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate
and support the government, private sector and local communities, to
establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach
in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of
this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community
prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and
the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that contribute
to land-based Greenhouse Gas emissions”.

Key Purpose of the Job
KELOLA Sendang is a sustainable landscape
management project that creates various models using landscape approach.
KELOLA Sendang achieved a lot since over the last 3 years, while also
developing ideas, adapting to lessons learnt and changing in the face of
dynamic biophysical and political contexts. Despite this, KELOLA Sendang has
produced many stories of change and lesson learnt, summarizing KELOLA
Sendang’s knowledge in order to enable and inspire many people to act.
Research and publications on the socio-culture in
the Sembilang Dangku landscape are still very limited. A series of studies
are needed to provide a more in-depth and complete picture of the
socio-cultural conditions of communities in the South Sumatra region for
further management planning. For this reasons, KELOLA Sendang project is now
looking for a team as Socio-Cultural Research & Writings Consultant.
The objectives of the research and writings are:

To
describe the key indispensables of socio-cultural aspect in within the
communities of Sembilang-Dangku
·
To
analyze social change in Sembilang-Dangku and conceivable to development,
prior and after the KELOLA Sendang intervention
·
To
provide recommendation of further interventions needed for sustainable
landscape management
The research and writings produced will be fall
under the following themes/issues:

Ethnography
and ethnohistory of forest and river ecology in Musi Watershed
·
Vulnerability
livelihood of Sialang Honey hunter within the evolving Sembilang-Dangku
landscape
·
Conflicting
policies on landscape and sustainable natural resources management in
multi-level governance (study case: Special Economic Zone (KEK) of South
Sumatra)
·
Village
institution and social movement of communities in Sembilang-Dangku landscape
·
Women’s
knowledge of the civilization along Musi Watershed
Scope of Work
A team of consultants comprises of
5 researchers and 2 editors.
Researchers:
1.
Conduct qualitative research dan produce papers on socio-culture
portrait of Sembilang-Dangku landscape. The objectives are:
·
To describe the key indispensables of socio-cultural aspect in within
the communities of Sembilang-Dangku
·
To analyze social change in Sembilang-Dangku and conceivable to
development, prior and after the KELOLA Sendang intervention
·
To provide recommendation of further interventions needed for
sustainable landscape management.
2.
The research and writings produced will be fall under the following
themes/issues:

3.
Determine the research method and implement a robust analysis. The
method should be adaptable and can be refined to fit with changes in the
sites and of the project management.
4.
Administer the research in selected sites. Collect secondary data
through literature review (including project documents, government’s official
documents/data, and other literatures). Collect primary data through
observation, in-depth interviews, and focus-group discussions in the research
sites.
5.
Deliver, synthesize, and analyze data gathered in the research.
6.
Communicate with ZSL’s Knowledge Management Team on a monthly basis to
update ZSL on activity implementation.
7.
Write an article based on theme assigned. Articles from all the
researchers will be compiled as part of book on socio-cultural portrait of
Sembilang-Dangku landscape.
Editors:
1.
Review the KELOLA Sendang documents (publications, reports) as
secondary data to start conceptualizing the analysis of sustainable landscape
management
2.
Organize and facilitate intensive meetings with the writers
(researchers) to elaborate research findings and formulate integrative
writings between the themes
3.
Supervise writing process, review and edit the writing drafts from
researchers.
4.
Write the book’s prolog on big picture of sustainable landscape, in
global world compare to the KELOLA Sendang case in South Sumatra
5.
Write the book’s epilog on the research findings and recommendation for
the landscape management’s sustainability strategy
6.
Provide the team and supervise the book production process: proofread,
layout and design and print; including translation into English
Deliverables
Researchers:
1.
A document of proposed method and key questions based on preliminary
study and interviews with the project staffs and partners.
2.
A report containing a data collection and analysis of the in-depth
interviews and focus group discussions
3.
Present the list of interviewee and resources names, including signed
participation consent for each name. Each name of the interviewee and
resources should be treated as anonym if needed.
4.
Present the recordings of the interviews and focus group discussions,
with a mention of the location, date, type of sample. Present a transcript of
all focus groups, in Bahasa Indonesia.
5.
A brief report of research methods, findings, and conclusions, in
Bahasa Indonesia and English.
Editors:
1.
Brief reports/minutes of meeting of each discussion held to elaborate
and formulate writings
2.
Prolog on big picture of sustainable landscape, in global world
compare to the KELOLA Sendang case in South Sumatra
3.
Epilog on the research findings and recommendation for the landscape
management’s sustainability strategy
4.
A book of socio-cultural portrait in Sembilang-Dangku landscape, in
Bahasa Indonesia and English

Recruitment Qualifications:
The assignment will be implemented by a team (Editors
& Researchers) with qualifications:
Editors
·
Should have
significant experience in working on Social Research, particularly in sectors
relating to forestry and natural resource management
·
Have
experience working in teams, preferably in a leadership position
·
Have a strong
client orientation, must be familiar with donor/contracting requirements and
be able to present reports on a timely manner
·
Strong
familiarity with social change, historical studies, and customary knowledge
are expected.
·
Should
have an advanced university degree in a related field with at least 5 years
of relevant professional experience.
Researchers
He/she are an expert in sociology, have experience
with qualitative studies, good understanding of communications and public
awareness, Indonesian media and publishing.
