World Resources Institute (WRI)

WRI Indonesia is affiliated with World Resources Institute (WRI), a global
environmental research organization that works with various stakeholders to
support policies and practices that are sustainable and profitable. WRI works
with leaders in more than 50 countries for more than 30 years, with offices in
Brazil, China, Europe, Africa, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States.
Launched in early 2014, WRI
Indonesia builds on WRI’s 20-year history in the country and the official
establishment of WRI Indonesia office has strengthened our impacts on the
ground in recent years. Our current work primarily focuses on forest and
land-use. Over time WRI Indonesia aims to expand its portfolio to include
climate, energy, and city and transportation. Therefore, it is important for
the organization to identify and put in place the research building blocks for
achieving the vision of WRI Indonesia supporting science- and data-driven
decision making at national and sub-national level.
Job Summary
As our Research Analyst you will report to the EU SUPA Project
Lead and play a crucial role in the successful implmentation of a project called: Sustainable Management
Peatland and Haze Mitigation in Southeast Asia (SUPA). In this project, WRI
Indonesia seeks to improve management of peatland in priority jurisdictions to
reduce GHG emission from peat degradation and fires while promoting equitable
land use practices to enhance local livelihoods; the initiative will also be
strengthen by promoting the sustainable management of peatlands in the ASEAN
region through collective actions and to enhance cooperation to support and
sustain local livelihoods, reduce the risk of fire and associated haze and
contribute to global environmental management.
The ASEAN Member States (AMS), especially countries with the
most significant contribution to peat degradation, such as Indonesia and
Malaysia, have taken several policy measures to address this issue. However,
tackling the issue of peat can only be effective through holistic and proactive
approaches across biophysical, social, and economic aspects, which require
collective efforts from non-state actors (NSAs), such as local communities,
private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGO), research institutions,
financial institutions, etc.
WRI Indonesia supports the AMS’ effort to reduce fires and
haze in the region by empowering SEA NSAs and improving their capacity on
sustainable management and use of peatlands with the following objectives:

Enhanced and mainstreamed knowledge
on sustainable peatland management through reliable data utilization, promotion
of actionable research, and best practices implementation at local level.

Catalyzed investment and business
model transformation of sustainable peat commodities
·
Improved awareness and capacity of
NSAs and communities to collaborate and provide mutual assistance in the future
for sustainable peatland management and protection
Job Responsibilities
The Peatland Research Analyst will
be expected to use their scientific expertise to develop research pipeline and
to conduct research for related topics across EU SUPA initiative. The research
outcomes are intended to promote innovative solutions and data-driven analyses
that accelerate restoration at-scale and transform business-as-usual into best
practices.
Below is the breakdown of the
responsibilities of the Research Analyst:
Research
activities management and development (70%)
·
To coordinate and support research projects related to forests and
landscape restoration, including but
not limited to co-creating research concept notes and reviewing knowledge
products
·
To coordinate and communicate with corresponding managers and/or lead
to make sure restoration-related research products are aligned with projects’
objectives
·
To advise on research collaboration among WRI Indonesia’s partners
·
To ensure high-quality data inputs by providing feedback on WRI and/or
partners’ research, and conduct and/or supervise fieldwork as necessary
·
Track and monitor the review process of restoration-related
publications
·
Contribute to the development of research capacity among WRI staff and
partners through training and consultation
·
Contribute to report writing, and other publishing to raise the profile
of WRI Indonesia’s ongoing activities
Project
management, coordination, and stakeholder engagement (30%)
·
Manage programs, budget and ensure timely and accurate completion of
grants and sub grants reports.
·
Actively assist with fundraising efforts to strengthen WRI Indonesia’s
research profile in the field of forestry
·
Collaborate and coordinate with staff across WRI Indonesia’s programs,
as well as WRI Global, and external partners to advance the interest of
research activities of WRI Indonesia as a whole
·
Liase with Science and Research Manager of the Global Restoration
Initiative Team
·
Organize meetings internally and externally, when necessary
·
Participate in discussions,
meetings, conferences with key stakeholders
·
Identify and engage with relevant
partners at the national and subnational level
·
Actively assist with fundraising efforts to strengthen WRI Indonesia’s
research profile in the field of forestry
Job
Qualifications
·
Legally able to work in Indonesia
·
Minimum 5-10 years of experience in
conducting research on environment and/or development with relevant program
implementation and project management experience
·
Master’s degree in environmental
policy/law, environmental sciences, natural resource study, sustainable
development, development study, or similar fields
·
Experience in building network of
relationships and partnerships with governments, civil society, and other
stakeholders engaged in environmental issues
·
Strong team player with ability to
work across institutional departments/programs
·
Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and
English
·
Strong communication, writing, and
research skills
·
Candidate must be self-motivated,
detail-oriented, and logical thinker with an ability to multi task, and work
well under pressure
·
Flexibility and willingness to
explore unfamiliar issues are all qualities that will be looked upon the hiring
process
Contract
Arrangement
Successful
candidate will be appointed on 3 (three) months of probation period under
consultancy contract. Upon successful completion of probationary period based
on performance review by WRI Indonesia, he/she will be appointed as a Full-Time
employee for 1 (one) year period.
Must
have authorization to work in Indonesia to be eligible for this position.
Final
candidates might be required to take a writing test and to produce two writing
samples when needed.
Remuneration:
Remuneration is commensurate
with experience and skills. WRI offers a competitive and comprehensive
