Vacancy Announcement "Senior Policy Officer"

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has a distinguished history of experts exploring and saving wildlife in some of the most remote and wild places remaining on Earth. The Wildlife Conservation Society-Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) has significantly grown over the last decades and contributed to supporting the Government of Indonesia (GoI), particularly the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) in conserving Indonesia's biodiversity. WCS-IP is structured under five core thematic programs: Forests, Marine, Wildlife Trade & Policy, One Health, and Rights & Communities. These programs are supported by cross-cutting units namely Science & Technology, Conservation Network & Partnership, and Operations.

To achieve our overall goal of saving wildlife and wild places, WCS-IP is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Policy Officer. The position will directly report to Wildlife Policy Senior Coordinator and work with other WCS-IP staff.

TASK AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to scientific research and its analysis, as well as strategy development, related to institutional, policy, and regulation on species conservation, wildlife trade, wildlife cybercrime, sustainable biodiversity financing, and One Health approach in Indonesia.
  • Write, publish, and present policy research findings through briefing papers, policy papers, technical reports, and presentations.
  • Support the Government of Indonesia (i.e., MoEF) to conduct assessment on policy and legal framework of species conservation and provide recommendation on the development of strategies related to biodiversity conservation, both at national level and international level (i.e., CITES, CBD, and other international/regional biodiversity-related conventions).
  • Liaise and establish good working relationships and/or strategic partnerships with key stakeholders at sub-national, national, and international levels, to ensure successful coordination, implementation, and follow-up project activities. Main communication and coordination will be with MoEF, parliament, donors, academicians, and other relevant Civil Society Organizations.
  • Contribute to the project management and implementation, including agreed workplan under the Memorandum of Understanding between WCS-IP and MoEF, to ensure the approved work plans and activities are undertaken promptly in line with budgetary means.
  • Provide technical and facilitating support to meetings, discussions, training, seminars, workshops and public outreach activities as required (i.e develop Term of Reference, budget activities, meeting design etc.).
  • Prepare activity reports, donor reports, and assist in preparing financial reports as required, in Indonesian or English.
  • Assist in identifying future strategies for program and organization including participation in developing project proposals, as required.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Experience

  • The post-holder should have a degree in policy studies, law, forestry, environmental studies, social science, and/or relevant discipline.
  • Minimum five years of experience for bachelor’s degree or two years of experience for master’s degree in related issues.
  • Good knowledge and experience in policy studies and international conventions is preferable.
  • Good professional English skills (writing, speaking, reading).

  • Effective at personal organization and managing multiple priorities with the ability to work under shortage of time.
  • Good initiative and capable of working independently as well as an effective team player.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with people in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.
  • Experience working with a broad and diverse network of groups and individuals.
  • Good computer skills, especially Microsoft applications
