Job Description

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) exists to protect the natural world and defend our basic human right to a secure environment.

EJF works internationally to inform policy and drive systemic, durable reforms to protect our environment and defend human rights. We investigate and expose abuses and support environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples, communities, and independent journalists on the frontlines of environmental injustice. Our campaigns aim to secure peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures.

Our investigators, researchers, filmmakers, and campaigners work with grassroots partners and environmental defenders across the globe.

Our work to secure environmental justice aims to protect our global climate, ocean, forests, and wildlife and defend basic human rights.

EJF is working in Indonesia to end illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels and actively promote improvements to policymaking, corporate governance and management of fisheries.

 EJF is seeking to employ an Indonesia Senior Campaigner to join its Indonesia team. This position will involve conducting high-level advocacy with the Government of Indonesia (GOI) to achieve EJF objectives, planning and coordinating both desk-based research to facilitate and guide EJF’s campaigns as well as field-based investigations alongside EJF colleagues and local partners. Advocacy with the GOI will involve convening meetings, preparing briefings and reports, and engaging in communications with relevant GOI ministries and departments.

Successful candidates should be comfortable working independently, be adept at team coordination, conducting both desk-based and field-based research, confident in public speaking, and be prepared to travel within Indonesia.

 

Post Title: Indonesia Senior Campaigner

Type of appointment: Fixed term

Remuneration: $2,000 – 2,400 per month, depending on experience

Duration of contract: 24 months (potentially renewable or convertible to a permanent position, subject to performance review)

Location: Jakarta based with opportunity to travel often.

This position is open to Indonesian citizens only.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia
  • Professional proficiency in the English language
  • A degree in any relevant discipline (journalism, social science, environmental science, marine sciences, etc)
  • 5+ years of work experience (journalism, NGOs, private sector, field work, etc)
  • Demonstrable experience forming and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Experience in conducting advocacy and lobbying national government agencies.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in local and national policies, regulations, and legislative processes to influence decision-making effectively.
  • Ability to use desk-based internet research to gather and interpret information track policy trends and develop evidence-based advocacy strategies.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc)

Desirable skills and experience:

  • A higher degree in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrable experience in team management, coordination.
  • Experience in working on any of the following topics: combatting IUU fishing or destructive fishing practices, human rights abuses in fishing, bottom trawling, marine conservation issues, seafood traceability.
  • Existing networks with government agencies, private sectors, NGOs and related stakeholders
  • Professional camera experience (film or photography)
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Experience in conducting field-based research projects.
