AcF Vacancy : Ram Pump System Officer to be based in Kupang, NTT

RAM PUMP SYSTEM OFFICER (1 position)

Duration of contract : April 2011 - August 2012

The ram-pump is a pumping technology ideally suited for communities living above the water source. No external power source is required for operation. The pump utilizes kinetic energy of water flowing into it and translates that energy into pushing the water to a higher height. Over the past 4 years Action Contre la Faim (ACF) has perfected a robust ram-pump model which boasts both low-maintenance and efficiency.

ACF is seeking qualified applicants for a Ram-Pump Officer (RPO) position. This position will be responsible for managing in-house fabrication of ram-pumps; producing informational campaigns and communications; developing a ram-pump center; and initiating partnerships for integrating the ram-pump into water projects.


ACF will provide the selected RPO candidate with training and orientation on ram-pump technology. The ideal candidate will be a quick learner and innovative thinker with broad background. She/he will be capable of coordinating and organizing meetings or design sessions with the intent of forwarding the ACF Ram-Pump as a viable technology option for WaSH actors, stakeholders and entrepreneurs.

1. Responsible for promoting Ram-Pump technology
- Develop and carry out a promotion plan with local stakeholders including disseminating design booklets and providing related presentations to local universities, government units, and organizations
- Draft articles on the ram-pump for submission to local newsletters and journals

2. Responsible for setting up an autonomous Ram-Pump center
- Develop presentations, props, communications and demonstration models for an informational center that encourages research and investment of the ram-pump
- Oversee a business plan study for the ram-pump and facilitate entrepreneurs and suppliers in adopting the resulting business model
- Devise validation mechanisms for maintaining ACF, quality design and fabrication

3. Responsible for initiating partnerships for implementation of Ram-Pumps
- Work with the ACF team to identify and prioritize potential sites for ram-pump installations in TTS and Kupang districts
- Link ram-pump technology with actors and provide trainings
- Collaborate with partners to integrate ram-pumps into gravity feed system designs and ensure both technical and financial feasibility
- Follow-up and monitor ram-pump projects with regular site visits
- Sustain ram-pump projects by providing community trainings on operation, repair and maintenance

4. Responsible for managing production of Ram-Pumps
- Manage supplies for small, in-house machine shop and cross-check quality control of ram-pump fabrication
- Lead trainings for transferring knowledge of fabrication process to private sector

Qualifications/experience:
· Bachelors degree in communications, marketing, environmental studies or engineering
· Technical aptitude preferred with strong scores in math and physics
· Capacity to work independently and lead meetings, trainings or presentations
· Experience collaborating on diverse teams
· Exceptional public speaking ability
· Good level of English (written and spoken)
