Cordia Caritas Medan, now Caritas PSE, based on the Archbishop's decree has been implementing Livelihood project financially supported by Secour Catholique/caritas France since 1st of January 2010 – 31st of December 2010 and extended for another six (6) months started 1st of January 2011 – 30th of June
2011, entitled 'INCREASING ACCESS TO SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR UNEMPLOYED POOR WOMEN IN 6 VULNERABLE VILLAGES IN NORTH SUMATRA'
The project is implemented towards the 6 target villages selected for this project are all locate in North Sumatra Province which socio-culturally belongs to patriarchal society with Islam and Christianity as the main religious denominations. Patriarchy, Islam and Christianity strengthens the position of men in public life. The ecological-economical situation in the target areas also strengthens the position of men. In these areas 70-80% of the population is farmers and labours and the management of yields is in the hands of men. Consequently, in the decision-making process men have the big words.
CARITAS PSE felt that this made it nessesary to focuss this project on improving the poverty situation of women in communities. In doing so, women will contribute to the income of the family that will enable them to provide for more nutricious food for their families, pay for schooling of the children and provide for basic healthcare when needed. Practical wise, when developing livelihood interventions, women groups are more accessable because they have more time availability than the men of the community.
Since the project comes to the end, Caritas PSE is going to undergo an evaluation conducted by an external agency. The goal for the final external Evaluation of the Project is to assess the results, impacts, and lessons learnt. The final evaluation report is to bring out the performance of the project, its relevance and its success. The evaluation will also identify the main stakeholders of the project and their roles during project implementation. And it is expected that the result of final evaluation would give additional information and recommendation to a future program.
