Project Background
Indonesia is one of the largest exporters of spices in the world in order to three after China and India. Historically and until now an important center of Maluku spice trade which came from Indonesia. Meanwhile, commodities and spices (clove and nutmeg) is a potentially large source of income and to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the people of Maluku. But the reality looks a constraint on some of the market system that caused problems at every level.
In November 2010, Mercy Corps is doing the assessment which showed that farmers' knowledge in the techniques of cultivation of cloves and nutmeg is still low. The absence of information or knowledge transfer in the local area causing farmers can not afford to rehabilitate the plants, controlling pests and treating plants. So they are very interested in working together to study the cultivation of good technique and identify opportunities for rejuvenation of new plants as well as information benefits arising after applying it.
Through the Program SUD (Spice Up the Deal), Mercy Corps will work with an expert cultivation of spices and provide TOT (Training of trainers) to farmers to increase the knowledge of how to grow and improve agricultural practices so that we can expect there will be changes in the levels gradual and sustainable farmers.
Project Objectives
Provides comprehensive information (holistic) on cultivation practices of good spices and can be implemented at farm level. And provide recommendations regarding the implementation of the One-Stop Services of good farming practice.
Consultant Tasks
Analyze the current condition of the farmers through field surveys, observations and interview. Establish guide or a module that provides information of good farming practices to farmer. Implemented ToT to the OSS (One Stop Service / One-Stop Service) to spread the knowledge of cultivation practices and transfer spices through School field to demonstrate how to implement good farming techniques.
Time and Work Areas
An agricultural consultant who has been tied to contracts with Mercy Corps will work for 10 days with the territory
work on the island of Ambon and Seram, Maluku Province.
Qualification
Educational background in agriculture / forestry / plantation. Experience in facilitating training or counseling and ToT about the cultivation of cloves and Nutmeg. Experience in applying the material - a natural ingredient in pest and disease prevention. Experience in identifying problems and needs of the farming community of clove and Nutmeg. Able to establish good communication with farming communities and understand local conditions local
