One of the
biggest obstacles to the expansion of the insurance sector is that much of the
target market is unfamiliar with formal insurance and does not have basic
financial literacy or education. Many potential clients do not understand how
insurance works or what benefits it can offer, and for that reason they hesitate
to buy insurance. This low awareness coupled with low levels of financial
literacy makes poor communities even more vulnerable to the effects of
disasters and other financial shocks. Insurance education, or consumer
education in micro insurance coupled with financial literacy and financial
management training, is an important systematic effort to provide information
about risk management and the role of insurance.  The objective of financial and insurance
education is to develop participants’ knowledge, skills and attitudes in order
to bring about a change in their risk management behavior.

program will achieve two primary results:
1)    Over a period of
September 2012 – 31 December 2014, 300,000 beneficiaries will receive financial

share the learning process that occurs with targeted groups of beneficiaries of
the SMILE program.
