Mercy Corps Indonesia is currently seeking to fill the post through external candidates:
Project Summary WOW² (Working for WASH
Wellness)
Purpose: Challenges
around the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector are universal. Globally, 2.4 billion people will be living
without improved sanitation in 2015.[1]Unsafe water, poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene cause diarrhea diseases
that claim the lives of more than 800,000 children under age five.[2] Indonesiafaces these same issues with limited access to safe water sources and basic
sanitation. Due to its diverse geography and limited access to improved water
sources, ensuring access to clean, safe water and proper sanitation and hygiene
is a pressing challenge.
Goals
and Objectives: To address this challenge, the
overall goal of the proposed program is to improve health outcomes and reduce
the incidence of water-borne diseases through improvement of water sources,
clean water option provision and access to basic sanitation facilities in two
key locations in Indonesia.
The specific objectives of the project are as follows:
· Build model WASH facilities
and behaviors in community-based health centers.
· Increase community awareness
of health and WASH best practices and behaviors.
· Encourage uptake of WASH best
practices through community-led interventions.
Program
Area: To
develop potential models for replication throughout Indonesia, Mercy Corps identified
two locations with common Indonesian WASH challenges. Pulau Ende, a rural
mountainous island, has limited water resources and a low level of uptake of
WASH best practices. Pakisjaya, a rural area, has abundant water resources but
limited uptake of WASH best practices. Through success in both areas, Mercy
Corps will develop models that can be more easily replicated in other parts of Indonesia.
Program
Activities: Utilizing proven Mercy Corps
methodology around WASH programming, the WoW2 Project will work with
community-based health centers and schools to build hygienic WASH facilities, including
toilet facilities, hand-washing stations, and water sanitizing stations. These
facilities will demonstrate success in WASH best practices to the greater
community and provide critical access to such facilities for communities in
need of WASH capacity. Using these health centers and schools as a foundation
for community outreach, the program will train community trainers who will
proliferate WASH best practices to the greater community. Mercy Corps will
facilitate a community-led process to implement a WASH-related program
intervention to fill a critical gap in the current WASH infrastructure.
