Cocoa is an important commodity in Indonesia, especially because about 1.6
million smallholder farmers relies their livelihood on this commodity.
However, in these last two decades, the cocoa sector in Indonesia has been
impacted by problems that have decreased the productivity and production of
cocoa. Furthermore, these conditions have decreased farmer income and
affecting their livelihoods and in which has caused many farmers lost their
interest to cocoa farming. To address these issues and to ensure
sustainability of cocoa supply, cocoa sustainability programs have been
developed and being implemented by stakeholders in the value chain,
including private sectors, INGOs, NGOs and government. These programs aimed
to increase productivity and production of cocoa and through improving the
farmer’s capacity on cocoa farming and establishing pro-farmer business
environment.
