Description of Responsibilities

Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Jakarta Office and direct supervision of the Programme Specialist and head of Science for Society Unit, the incumbent shall provide technical and administrative assistance in the implementation and coordination of the extra-budgetary project under JFIT: Strengthening Resilience of Coastal and Small Island Communities towards Hydro-Meteorological Hazards and Climate Change Impacts (StResCom).

The incumbent shall:

    Provide support to the day-to-day coordination of StResCom project activities, i.e. assist in planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting;
    Provide support in project implementation and monitoring, such as:
        Assisting in the review and analysis of results of activities implemented during Phase 3 of StResCom in Indonesia, Philippines and Timor-Leste;
        As necessary, conducting review and desk studies on topics such as knowledge-based risk reduction, climate change adaptation, local and indigenous knowledge, hydro-meteorological hazards, and small islands and coastal communities;
    Provide technical and logistic assistance in organizing meetings, regional and local workshops in Indonesia, Timor Leste and the Philippines;
    Participate in meetings related to the project, as necessary;
    Assist in the development of deliverables for project activities;
    Assist in the development and maintenance of positive working relationships with UNESCO’s partners and relevant stakeholders, including but not limited to government agencies, donors, non-governmental organization, private sectors, and local communities;
    Prepare short reports, summaries, minutes of meetings, media releases, updates for website and other communication materials, and any other inputs related to the StResCom project as necessary;
    Provide administrative and financial assistance and advice, including assistance in the provision of oversight of all administrative and financial matters related to the implementation of the StResCom project, and ensure that all operations under the projects such as contracts, travel order, reporting and financial disbursements are in line with UNESCO’s administrative rules and regulations; and
    Perform other official duties as may be required by the immediate Supervisors and the Director of the Office. Specifically, the postholder will be expected to provide support to implementation of activities of the SCS Unit in general.

This position will suit a university graduate who wishes to gain knowledge and experience in disaster risk reduction and/or climate change adaptation within a multilateral international development agency.

Professionalism and knowledge:

    Strong communication skills - spoken and written English

    Strong analytical skills and ability to analyze complex issues;

    Ability to identify priority activities and assignments and make necessary adjustments as required

    Knowledge and skills on computer software (Microsoft words, excel, powerpoint), internet, and emails;

    Ability to work independently and proactively with minimum supervision, with efficiency, competence, integrity and in harmony with people of different national backgrounds

    Ability to work under heavy pressure while maintaining accuracy and paying attention to details

    Ability to work beyond normal working hours when necessary

    Ability to travel for work

Qualifications:

Education: University Degree  (preferably masters degree) in environmental sciences or social sciences from a recognized and reputable university, with knowledge on issues related to disaster risk reduction, climate change, indigenous knowledge, environmental conservation and sustainable development. Postgraduate degrees would be an asset.

Work Experience: 4-5 years successful history of employment in environmental management and programme coordination, preferably in governmental or non-governmental agencies.

Languages: Must have fluency in spoken and written English, in particular the ability to draft documents and express views in a clear and concise manner. Working knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog and/or Tetum is an asset.

Other Skills: Knowledge of UN systems and procedures as they relate to Staff Regulations and Rules, personnel and administrative policies and procedures as well as financial rules and procedures is an asset.
