Revised : SCI seeks NUTRITION SPECIALIST, 1 position, based in Malang – East Java

NUTRITION SPECIALIST, 1 position, based in Malang – East Java
Code : NS-Malang

To provide technical and ensure technical quality during implementation of the GAIN Baduta project in East Java province (Malang and Sidoarjo districts), ensuring integration into already existing activities/projects and collaboration with MoH and other partners and stakeholders involved in relevant nutrition work in order to achieve smooth implementation and desired outcomes through synergy

Reports to: Project Manager

Dimensions:
The Nutrition Specialist of BADUTA project will be responsible for providing technical assistance to ensure quality of project implementation in the area of maternal, infant and young child nutrition, also in building the capacities of program team, target communities, local government, to ensure high quality of implementation of project activities. S/he will liaise, responsible to maintain good relationship to all key stakeholders and act as the technical person to the overall BADUTA Project in Sidoarjo and Malang districts. S/he will contribute to technical discussion with donor, designing training program in the area of infant and young child feeding for health workers and community cadres in line with Indonesia's national module, contribute to behavior change communication activities under BADUTA project, also responsible in analyzing monitoring and evaluation data, involving children and community members.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Project implementation
  • Assess, monitor and appraise the situation with regard to infant and young child nutrition in communities with the view to design/develop interventions that are appropriate to the needs.
  • In collaboration with project team and partners, lead the technical quality of implementation of activities that strengthen the health and nutrition services, and promote optimum infant and young child nutrition in West Java area, ensure provision of support and counseling to pregnant and lactating mothers, families with children under two on breastfeeding, and introduction of appropriate and locally available complementary foods.
  • Monitor the situation as it relates to maternal nutrition, breastfeeding and young child feeding practices, violation of the code of marketing of breast milk substitutes and other related policies, and provide updates on current and emerging issues.
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Health at national, provincial and district levels to ensure that Baduta project interventions are implemented according to national policy guidelines and agreed project design
  • Build and foster professional partnership linkages with other relevant authorities, INGOs, and local NGOs doing similar nutrition work and/or activities.
  • Represent Save the Children in nutrition for and other nutrition related meetings.
  • Utilize opportunities within Save the Children education and protection projects to disseminate information related to infant and young child nutrition within the programme area.
  • Document lessons learnt and contribute to Save the Children international advocacy on Infant and Young child nutrition in emergencies.
  • Develop and support key staff's capacity to meet their responsibilities and facilitate appropriate professional development as well as ensure the capacity building to other stake holders within the scope of project and priorities of Save the Children
  • Produce timely and accurate report in line with Save the Children and donor's requirement 
  • Work closely with MEAL team to develop a system for nutritional surveillance information to be contextualized with other information and disseminate to key decision makers
  • Develop mechanisms for improving the flow of nutrition information vertically and horizontally between the relevant bodies


    Child Safeguarding Policy (CSP) Responsibilities
  • Support Baduta PM in ensuring full compliance of CSP at provincial and district level.
  • As a member of staff, understand compliance with CSP and work in coordination with colleagues to comply with CSP
  • In the lead of PM, respond to all CSP concerns expressed or discovered appropriately and effectively


    Emergency Response

    As needed, provide inputs and contribute to coordination of financial and Budget Management when Save the Children responding to any potential emergencies in the project working area

    QUALIFICATION
  • University Degree (S1) in nutrition or other relevant field, Master's will be preferable, or equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years work experience in health and nutrition programmes, especially in infant and young child nutrition programming and policies
  • Familiar with the infant and young child feeding training program for health workers and community cadres, including the supportive supervision
  • Good communication skills
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Experience in working for an INGO, working within the Indonesia health system, organizing and conducting training at grassroots level.
  • Experience in conducting nutrition assessments/ surveys and an understanding of nutritional surveillance systems.
  • Computer literate and excellent skills in database, spreadsheet and presentational software, also the use of WHO Anthropometry software
  • Knowledge of international best practice and guidelines, project design development, behavior change and communication strategy in the area on maternal;, infant and young child nutrition.
  • Knowledge of local languages
