Fish
Forever’s goal is to empower the world’s most vulnerable coastal
communities to sustainably manage their fisheries and simultaneously
strengthen local fisheries, increase food security and protect nature.
The combination of fisher empowerment, capacity building and community
mobilization will help ensure that coastal fisheries are ecologically
and economically sustainable for generations to come, building the
momentum for wide-scale adoption across the globe.
Program Overview
Rare’s
Indonesia program, based in Bogor, Indonesia is pursuing ambitious,
evidence based countrywide near shore fisheries strategies that combine
No-Take-Zones and rights-based fishery zones (TURF – Reserves/Special
Fisheries Management Zones). Our goal is to ensure greater community
ownership and benefits that encourage long-term sustainable marine
resource management along with the protection of important
biodiversity. This program builds on Rare’s significant experience and
success through its behavior change campaigns and technical assistance
called Pride Campaigns.
Position Overview
The
Manager, Fisheries Organizational and Institutional Development will
lead all implementation activities relative to organizational and
institutional development at Rare’s prototype and campaign sites in
Indonesia. S/he will be responsible for:
- Community engagement and participation processes: designing engagement strategy with communities, key stakeholders to facilitate behavior change for improvement of fishery and for conservation of marine resources.
- Community institution capacity building: S/he will work closely local implementing partners’ staff in organizing and enhancing the management of local fisheries associations and or cooperatives at the TURF – Reserve Sites, and ensure that fishers and communities are consulted in all appropriate policies and plans relative to the program implementation.
The Manager will provide leadership to
ensure the smooth execution of the organizational and institutional
development components of the campaign during the prototype and
implementation phases of the program. The successful candidate will have
the following:
- At least 5 years’ experience in the formation and strengthening of community based organizations, fisheries associations and or cooperatives;
- Demonstrated success in strengthening marine protected area /fisheries governance and or coastal resource management, comfort and expertise in coordinating with the district government offices, comfort in working with multi stakeholders;
- Demonstrate understanding on the community engagement strategies, community dynamics analysis; and familiarity with social intervention tools, concept and strategies
- A background in coaching and mentoring staff and delivering targeted in-house training to improve capacity for marine theme development along with the ability to perform language and cultural translation revisions to ensure Pride campaign materials are appropriate and effective;
- Ability and willingness to travel inside the country under demanding conditions and or occasional travel abroad (when necessary);
- The ability to work with minimal supervision independently and as part of a team;
- A bachelor’s degree preferably in Cooperative Development, Social Work, Environmental Science, Fisheries, and or other related field; and
- Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English languages.
