In Indonesia, every year estimated 73,000 babies die before passing
through the first 28 days of life. It means 200 babies die every day,
1 baby dies every 7 minute. This numbers have survived for the last 10
years. Half of all infant deaths, or 36,500 were in the five provinces
of West Java, East Java, Central Java, North Sumatra and Banten).

However, the ratio of infant deaths per 1,000 live births was higher
in eastern Indonesia which is left behind. In West Papua, 73 newborn
infants died per 1,000 live births. Gorontalo 67 newborns die every
1,000 live births. It much higher than the national average is 34
deaths per 1,000 live births.

Newborn deaths are often associated with prematurity/low birth weight
(LBW), asphyxia and infection. Because of that, the birth of the baby
accompanied by trained health personnel in quality health care is
essential to prevent the death of the newborn.
