Overview

Indonesia is the world’s leading producer and exporter of palm oil deeply rooted in how the industry operates, necessitating broad scale policy and private sector reforms.

WRI Indonesia is also embarking on new two interrelated in-country initiatives aimed at increasing the sustainability of palm oil and other land-based commodities. The first, the Land Use Accountability project, which, coupled with WRI’s cutting edge technology and data available through the Global Forest Watch platform and its associated applications (such as GFW Commodities and GFW Fires), seeks to develop CPO traceability system and strengthen law enforcement effort on forest fires as use cases of granular field-acquired data. The outputs of this project will then support the implementation of the second initiative –supporting implementation of the recently announced One Map policy in Riau. This initiative seeks to significantly accelerate the improvement of accuracy and availability of key geospatial data. direction. With up-to-date and accurate geospatial information that includes ownership and tenurial boundaries for each parcel of lands, land use accountability can be achieved. The impacts of this improvement are wide ranging, it can strengthen law enforcement effort for forest fires occurrences, as well as ensuring robust monitoring means through traceability mechanism for sustainable commodity productions.

This position will lead the implementation of the Land Use Accountability Project described above, including  team management, strategy development, partner engagement, fundraising, workplan development, implementation, and reporting. 
Longer term, this position will support WRI’s involvement in the One Map initiative, by feeding in the outputs of the Land Use Accountability Project and leading the private sector engagement strategies. Furthermore, this position will also broadly support the private sector engagement of the GFW Commodities work in Indonesia. He or she will report to the WRI Indonesia Director and will liaise with SE Asia Commodities Manager and GFW Commodities global team in the implementation of the project.

 Responsibility 

Project Management (50% of time required)

• Translates project logical framework into strategies and work plans;
• Leads project team in project implementation, ensuring that desired outputs are delivered and outcomes are achieved;
• Manages private sector and NGO partnerships to produce desired results;
• Assumes responsibility for project budgets with support from the Financial Coordinator;
• Leads strategic engagement with project funders, partners, and stakeholders;
• Proactively identifies and addresses opportunities and challenges to the project arising internally or externally, including by adjusting strategies and management approaches;
• Defines project success criteria, monitors and evaluates performance with respect to these criteria, and communicates progress to involved parties throughout project life cycle.

Program Development (25% of time required)

• Builds the profile of WRI and GFW through communications and outreach to target audiences globally and in key geographies;
• Supports the SE Asia Commodities manager in;
• In coordination with the SE Asia Commodities Manager, cultivates private sector and NGO partnerships to advance GFW Commodities objectives, including private sector uptake of GFW Commodities data and tools;
• Develops and oversees development of communications materials, such as concept notes and presentations, targeting existing and prospective partners and stakeholders of project;
• Contributes to overall GFW and Forest Program strategy development, partnership development, fundraising, and monitoring and evaluation activities.

Research & Knowledge (25% of time required)

• Identifies and advances new lines of research and analysis relevant to the projects’ influence strategy and objectives;
• Authors or co-authors knowledge products (e.g., reports, briefs, data products, tools, blog);
• Contributes expertise to relevant cross-programmatic initiatives in WRI, such as WRI Indonesia Riau One Map project.

Required Qualifications

• Graduate degree in a related field, preferably with coursework in business, supply chain and logistics, and corporate sustainability;
• Studies, interest or experience working on environmental issues and specifically forest or commodities issues;
• Minimum 4-7 years of full-time work experience in relevant field, with program implementation and project management experience;
• Familiarity with the supply chain and sustainability issues faced by companies, such as supplier risk mitigation strategies, supply chain key performance indicators, and analytics related to supplier environmental performance;
• Ability to write and speak in an organized, clear, and articulate manner (in English) for a wide range of audiences, especially the private sector and local NGOs;
• Detail-oriented and organized thinker who can juggle multiple, competing priorities;
• Ability to travel when needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working within multistakeholder / intersectoral groups such as sustainable commodity or finance roundtables, certification initiatives, public-private sector collaborations, etc
Direct experience in agribusiness companies and/or corporate engagement
Familiarity with current and potential uses of geospatial data for supply chain management, land use planning, forest management, and other relevant private sector decision-making processes;
Professional fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
 

Final candidates will be required to take a writing test.
