Call for Proposals Search for Common Ground Indonesia Implementation Support for “Promoting Peaceful Narratives to Youth and Ex-Prisoners in Indonesia”

The Organization
Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is an international non-profit organization that promotes a peaceful resolution of conflicts. With headquarters in Washington, DC and a European office in Brussels, Belgium, SFCG’s mission is to transform how individuals, organizations, and governments deal with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. SFCG seeks to help conflicting parties understand their differences and act on their commonalities. With over 700 staff worldwide, SFCG implements projects in 35 countries, including in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

SFCG has been working in Indonesia since 2002. As a diverse country, Indonesia has a challenge of managing peace and tolerance within its communities. SFCG with the local partners supports the process of building peace through media, dialogue, outreach, and capacity strengthening.

Summary of Opportunity
SFCG is seeking a local Indonesian non-governmental organization to support SFCG’s ongoing a 21 months project, “Promoting Peaceful Narratives to Youth and Ex-Prisoners in Indonesia”. This organization will provide its expertise to the project’s goal, to reduce the influence of violent extremist narratives among internet users - particularly youth and ex-prisoners - in Indonesia, as a response to growing intolerance and unchallenged hate speech online in recent years.

Specifically, SFCG is seeking an organization to support the following activities:

  1. Creation of (or develop existing) Messaging Hub Task-Force: Generate a comprehensive approach to tackling the vast swathes of extremist content and recruitment tools used online, to bring in representatives from key media outlets, civil society and research institutions, government bodies, law enforcement, religious organizations and social media companies such as Facebook and Path, amongst others.

  1. Monthly Adaptation Workshops: facilitate 10 monthly adaptation workshops, which will enable the messaging-hub task-force to come together, analyze the progress of the project’s activities, share insights on areas of improvement or deeper coordination, examine areas for further expansion of the messaging campaign or media content produced, and discuss the latest trends and tactics of extremist organizations and how the project’s activities can adapt to the ever-changing dynamics.

  1. Kuliah Tujuh Menit Videos (Seven-minute sermons): Create a series of five videos featuring moderate Islamic scholars that will counter the current violent and hateful religious narratives. They will be uploaded to various social media platforms, such as Facebook and YouTube, where Search will utilize the promoted post feature that are available to target the demographics.

  1. Monthly Intra- and Inter-Religious Dialogues: Facilitate two alternating streams of alternating 10 religious dialogues with at-risk high-school and university students, which will both ground the project’s messaging to a people-to-people methodology, as well as build on the ground networks and connections within and across religious divides.

  1. Other SFCG work related to the production of multi-platform media content for a 12-month campaign and facilitating collaborative development workshops.

Ideal Qualifications
  • Established local networks of key media players, civil society, religious actors, or university-based research & development organization
  • Experience working in religious freedom, counter violent extremism, interfaith dialogue, and peacebuilding
  • Strong myriad of experience in convening and facilitating interfaith discussions
  • Proven record in conducting media campaigns
  • Possess production unit with proven record in media content creation, messaging and campaign development

To Apply: Please send a description of your organization and proposal for completing the requested work, including a basic budget to phandayani@sfcg.org. Please submit your materials before Friday, February 9th, 2018.
