with regional travel up to 30%
Position Summary: The
Communications Director will work with the Chief of Party (COP), Jalin technical
staff, field teams, and external partners to manage and oversee all strategic communication
for the project. The Communications Director will be responsible for managing
and directing all internal and external communications, marketing, and public
relations. In addition, the Communication
Director will coordinate events associated with project goals.
Program
Description: Through Jalin, USAID’s Flagship Maternal and Newborn Health
Activity, USAID/Indonesia’s role as a development partner will shift from
funding implementation of specific interventions, to facilitating and
supporting partnerships across a variety of stakeholders to: 1) catalyze local
solutions through co-creation processes; 2) leverage public and private
financing; and 3) increase the pace at which good quality local evidence is
made widely available and utilized.
In
six populous provinces across Indonesia, Jalin will work to create
opportunities to strengthen civic engagement and commitment to create a
movement for maternal and newborn health aligned with strong political
commitment from the Government of Indonesia. The Jalin Project aims improve
delivery and utilization of essential health and other services to reduce
preventable maternal and newborn deaths, particularly among the poorest and
most vulnerable populations
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead implementation of Jalin’s communication strategy;
- Provide communications support to Jalin’s Partnership team as they engage a broad range of stakeholders;
- In collaboration with the Technical and Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, Learning, and Adaptation teams, document and disseminate co-creation activities and lessons learned from implementation with stakeholders to encourage collective action and improve accountability;
- Strengthen program capacity and sustainability by increasing access to maternal and newborn health-related information and best practices, engaging civil society organizations, citizen bloggers, large media groups and media platforms to deepen their engagement and commitment to maternal and newborn health;
- Communicate with the development sector (the government of Indonesia, the US government, other donors, other implementers, Indonesian philanthropists and investors, etc.) on opportunities to improve maternal and newborn health;
- Ensure the project and all materials follow the Jalin Branding and Marking Plan;
- Support Jalin staff for the timely preparation and submission of reports and other deliverables including annual performance reports, annual work plans, and ad hoc presentations and reports;
- Evaluate impact of Jalin’s communications strategy and refine it based on lessons learned.
- Travel to field sites to oversee and implement various communications activities;
- Design and manage events;
- Manage external media relations;
- Support advocacy and policy development; and
- Supervise one Communication and Advocacy Officer.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, information and communications technology, or relevant international development field;
- At least ten-years of related experience in communications, marketing, documentation, dissemination, or similar work;
- Excellent understanding of existing communications tools and mechanisms, including web-based systems;
- Experience using both qualitative and quantitative methods for communications, such as media content analyses, stakeholder and issues mappings, market assessments, perception/stakeholder audits, and communications audits;
- Demonstrated expertise in managing media relations;
- Demonstrated experience writing program summaries, press releases, etc;
- Demonstrated experience organizing and managing public events, such as press conferences, workshops, and meetings with high visibility;
- Experience working with media and government, private sector, nongovernmental organizations, donors, and other relevant stakeholders;
- Previous exposure and experience in developing, implementing, and monitoring dissemination plans for knowledge products highly preferred;
- Experience working in political campaigns, advocacy campaigns, private sector, marketing a plus;
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; fluency in English required (oral and written);
- Computer literacy, specifically in Microsoft Word and Excel and ideally graphics programs, is required;
- Previous work experience and knowledge of USAID or other donor projects a plus;
- Knowledge of maternal and newborn health issues desirable;
- Ability to work in changeable and complex environments with multiple tasks, competing priorities, and short deadlines;
