Terrestrial Program Director (TPD)

The Terrestrial Program Director is a senior-level position that has strong management responsibilities on the conservation science, policies, planning and implementation of the terrestrial programs of CI Indonesia. The Director plays and oversees CI-Indonesia’s national policy works related to climate change mitigation and adaptation in forest/biodiversity conservation management and also CI’s terrestrial program strategies such as the sustainable landscape partnership (SLP) program and the ridge to reef conservation approaches. The Director will also play an important role in assisting fundraising and sustainability strategy for CI-Indonesia and partners within the CI Indonesia-Pacific Field Division. He/she reports directly to Vice President, CI Indonesia and works closely with Terrestrial Program Advisors, CI-I Program Managers, CI Asia-Pacific Field Division and CI-Headquarter.

The position is based in Jakarta but requires frequent travel to other CI field offices or project sites. Some international travel is required.

Key Responsibilities:

1.    Project Development and Implementation;

• Lead, provide technical and management support to all terrestrial programs within the CI-Indonesia priority regions and ensure that program/project results meet CI and project donor quality standards and expectations and that these projects are progressing on schedule.
• Promote experience-based learning processes and policy feedback loops/mechanisms with the CI-I Senior Management Team (SMT), field programs, headquarters, and partner government, private sector, and civil society organizations to develop and refine climate change adaptation strategies based on development of scientific baselines, creation of policy enabling conditions
• Support on-going alignment/initiatives to CI-I and HQ-based strategic planning and related new terrestrial programs and climate change initiatives with CI HQ Climate Change Initiative, and other technical team in each field program, as opportunities arise;

2.    Policy Development

• Lead policy initiatives required at national and sub-national level to support the goals/objectives of the sustainable landscape partnership and ridge to reef conservation approaches and other relevant strategic themes;
• Lead the amplification process of the lesson learnt from the sites to national/provincial level via policies or best practices to ensure bigger results such as the sustainable landscape partnership and other initiatives;
• Prepare white paper or policy recommendation for CI position on how improved forest management policies in Indonesia that amplify the learning of forest management practices in CI working sites and or others.
• Provides of timely quality information and technical advice on climate change issues and policies to CI global climate team, governments, and other partners such as Indonesian universities and NGOs;

3.    Capacity Building and Partnership

• Develop internal CI and external stakeholder/partner capacity in the area of climate change adaptation and mitigation project activities via output-based, learning-by-doing training modules, by preparing training packages and specific presentations, and by organizing, implementing, and evaluating and adjusting training modules to meet learner needs;
• Takes part in evaluating, capturing and codifying knowledge, synthesizing lessons and stimulating the uptake of best practices, through regional publications and reports and other knowledge materials on climate change adaptation and mitigation; and seek to improve the technical quality of the CI-I knowledge products, project documents, programming documents, etc;

4.    Assist in fundraising, strategic planning, partnerships, liaison with other agencies and partners

• Assist the Vice President and Terrestrial Program Advisor to respond proposal opportunities, tenders and grants related to climate change adaptation and mitigation projects, and also other funding proposal for the programs;
• Periodically review available literature and other sources of information, including global and region-specific materials, and keep CI-I offices informed of trends and issues related to climate change in the region/sub-region.

5. Assist in coordinating multidisciplinary and team approach to implementing terrestrial programs with climate change, improved livelihoods, private sector engagement, and biodiversity conservation components this include communicate climate change program outcomes and implementation, evaluation, and adjustment needs and support CI-I terrestrial program the SMT and their direct reports and provide leadership needed to work together as a team to achieve them;

Key Job Requirements:

Experience & Skill:

• Min. Master Degree in a relevant scientific discipline and experience with analysis of climate change scenarios and related climate change impacts on human communities and tropical ecosystems with at least 10 years’ experience. 
• Experience in conducting and supervising land use research and related modelling scenarios in tropical countries, analysing data and publishing results
• Solid understanding of tropical land use practices, and also Indonesian policies related to forestry, Protected Areas management, peatland and climate change issues.
• Proven ability in project conceptualization, development and fundraising.
• Proven ability to support colleagues across various disciplines, cultures and backgrounds to achieve shared goals
• Demonstrated ability to work in team environments and cultivate productive partnerships across a diversity of stakeholders
• Excellent communication and especially writing skills in Bahasa and English (previous experience in preparing funding proposals and donor reports is preferable). 
• Extensive networking experience with central, provincial, and national government agencies, alliance building with donor partners and other INGOs, institutions and other partner networking
• Excellent computer skills, including but not limited to MS Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point)
• Good project management experience
