Microentrepreneurship Awards
Launched in 2005, the Microentrepreneurship Awards is a program
implemented by Yayasan Mercy Corps Indonesia (YMCI) that aims at raise
awareness on the importance of micro-entrepreneurship and microfinance in
supporting the financial inclusion and economic empowerment of low-income
individuals. It also aims to highlight the important role micro-entrepreneurs
play and contribute in their local economies; catalyze innovations among
microfinance institutions (MFIs) that will lead to an increase in their
outreach and their micro-entrepreneur portfolios; and to leverage awareness of
policy makers within the government of Indonesia towards enabling a supportive
environment for micro-entrepreneurs through a conducive set of regulations.
For the 2017-2018 Awards (awarded in 2018), there are 9 awards, which
are divided into 5 category awards, 3 special awards, and 1 award for the best
MFI. 807 micro-entrepreneurs were nominated by the MFIs, after which the 807
nominees was shortlisted into 50 selected micro-entrepreneurs, and then further
selection process will be conducted to select 20 micro-entrepreneurs which will
be invited to attend a boot camp (business incubator) along with their MFI
representatives. During the boot camp, the participants would be judged by a
panel of juries to determine the winners of the 2017-2018 awards. The boot camp
would be followed up with the awards ceremony event. The winners of the
2017-2018 Awards will receive a cash prize, a notebook, a smartphone, and also
coaching and mentoring for two months to further develop their businesses.
