Program Overview

WRI Indonesia aspires to support the achievement of Indonesia’s sustainable development goals. In most part of those five areas we have comparative advantage and much to contribute:

• Forest and Landscape: Commodity-focused companies have their eyes set on Indonesia’s lands—most of the time resulting in conversion of pristine forests and peatlands into plantations. At the same time, President Joko Widodo’s food sovereignty targets entail expansion of palm oil, rice, sugarcane, and corn plantations, potentially resulting in deforestation through land clearing and peat conversion. Illegal logging is also a notable problem that is closely related to deforestation and forest degradation. Additionally, the country also faces perpetual predicament of dealing with forest and peat fires. Increasingly, the GOI recognizes the landscape approach and posit integrated watershed management and coastal zone protection, including its segrass meadows.
• Energy: Fossil fuels, Indonesia's main source of export revenues is still central to current and future of the country's energy policy, making 23% renewable energy target by 2025 appear to be unrealistic. Insufficient investment on innovation, lethargic participation from corporations and industries, lack of monitoring on renewable power infrastructure and unwieldy regulatory regime are inhibiting the energy transformation from reaching its full potential. Looking ahead, growing environmental concerns from illegal commodity encroachment to protected forest combined with sharp falls in coal prices call and the lack of access to electricity call into question the sustainability of an energy strategy based almost exclusively on fossil fuels.
• Cities: In parallel to the aforementioned national priorities, city leaders are also showing commitments to develop sustainable and smart cities, providing opportunities for us to address land-use, energy, and other issues pertaining to climate change using city-level approach. In total, over 120 million of Indonesian people today live in urban areas (2013), predicted to increase to 68% of total population by 2025—a huge shift from its previously rural, agricultural society, which also signals the timely need of focus in the sector as well. As pointed out in the recent New York Times report (2017) on Jakarta land subsidence, one of the main urban issues is water risk and management both for clean water provision as well as flood control.
• Climate: WRI Indonesia’s climate portfolio has vision to aid the Government to achieve its climate resilience and emission reduction targets through a clear, robust, transparent, and credible road-map and implementation involving all relevant stakeholders. Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) is the global medium for a country to pledge its emission reduction target and strategies. Indonesia needs to mainstream and translate the emission reduction target into sectoral and jurisdictional development programs, as well as develop a robust set of Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system. Indonesia also needs to set up its and National Long Term Climate Strategies (LTS) as part of contribution to achieve global zero net emissions in the second half of this century. Defining a New Climate Economy for Indonesia is actually an empirical-based and lead practitioners’ guided strategy for a climate resilient and low-carbon development in Indonesia. Working with private sectors to support Science-Based Targets Initiative and aligning companies GHG emissions reduction targets with Paris Agreement goals is an area that will be explored over the next five years.
• Oceans: To support the Government’s archipelagic-oriented development approach that is called the blue-economy vision as well as oceans-based climate change issues of blue carbon, WRI Indonesia envisions to promote the sustainable development in marine and fisheries sector. In the following five years, WRI Indonesia will start a portfolio by supporting the government to achieve a more sustainable fisheries management, marine conservation and coastal mangrove protection. 

Current sources of funding are grants from philanthropist groups and donor countries. WRI Indonesia just entered new funding territory that is through solicited fundraising initiatives. This trend will keep continuing as WRI Indonesia broaden its sources of funding including from global climate funding and aspired to provide more impact for sustainable futures of Indonesia.

Job Summary 

WRI Indonesia is looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to lead efforts to secure the financial resources and partnerships needed to advance the objectives and goals of the organization.  In this role, your efforts will support and grow our current annual budget and advance WRI Indonesia’s most critical projects and relationships. The successful candidate will oversee prospect research, donor stewardship, proposal writing, and internal project framing and be directly responsible for all donor relations managed through the WRI Indonesia office. You will guide fundraising efforts with foundations, corporations, bilateral and multilateral donors, and high net worth individuals with a high degree of cross-organizational coordination with WRI’s Global office and other international offices. The Business Development Manager will be an integral member of the Indonesia management team and of WRI’s global fundraising network.

A successful candidate for this position will be an accomplished, sophisticated, and results-oriented fundraiser with a minimum of 7 years of technical and international fundraising experience. You will have successfully built working relationships with senior program officers in the foundations, corporations, and/or government sectors. 

You will report to the Country Director.

Job Responsibilities

Funding Strategy & Proposal Development (60%)

• Develop and implement a fundraising strategy that consistently brings in significant resources (six- and seven-figure commitments) to WRI Indonesia’s program priorities.  
• Identify and research new major prospective donors in the six- and seven-figure range. 
• Maintain and update WRI Indonesia’s fundraising pipeline of opportunities and proposals, and fundraising contacts and engagement in Salesforce database. 
• Directly support and guide WRI Indonesia Director and other WRI Indonesia Program Managers in donor cultivation efforts including engaging WRI Indonesia Board members, arranging influential meetings, leading meeting preparations, and reporting out on donor meetings with an emphasis on enhancing relationship-building efforts.   
• Play a leadership role in coordination and contribution to the development of complex, multi-team proposals in the six and seven-figure range.  
• Guide the development of concept notes, proposals, proposal budgets and other related materials as needed to advance prospect engagement for securing a gift. 
• Engage in direct fundraising and proposal pitches, meetings, and donor cultivation efforts. 
• Work closely with WRI’s Global Development team on approaches to institutional donors and with other fundraisers across the network, and in the development of coordinated fundraising strategies.
• Monitor WRI Indonesia’s fundraising progress and share regular updates with WRI Indonesia Management team and other parts of the WRI network as needed. 
• Provide expert advice and assistance, including training and strategy development, to Indonesia managers, and support fundraising strategies in the Global Offices.

Donor Stewardship and Internal Coordination (40%)

• Coordinate, develop and maintain regular outreach and communications with current and prospective program donors and partners. 
• Ensure appropriate and timely follow-up on donor requests. Participate in institutional efforts to enhance relationships with current donors. 
• Establish and maintain strong and effective relationships with WRI staff around the world to collaborate on prospect strategies. 
• Encourage use of and serve as point person for WRI Indonesia on Salesforce database in relation to fundraising activities.
• Lend expertise in development and delivery of training materials and presentations for WRI Indonesia staff on fundraising best practices, prospect research, proposal development and donor stewardship. 
• Support annual and multi-year project planning efforts to ensure the development of aligned projects, compelling offers, and early engagement on fundraising priorities and opportunities. 
• Serve as the point person for WRI Indonesia with the Global Development team. 
• Liaise across peer organizations to identify opportunities, avoid conflicts, and seek best practice guidance. 
• Maintain up-to-date contacts and engagement tracking in Salesforce to monitor prospect progress, capture synergy opportunities, and avoid any institutional conflicts.
• Manage and cultivate other professional Development staff within Indonesia Program.

Job Qualifications

• Master's degree (or two additional years of relevant work experience)
• Minimum of seven year of external fundraising experience, preferably in a large, international organization. Prior engagement on environmental or climate/oceans/cities/forests/energy focus areas are desirable.
• Proven track record of securing 6-figure grants from foundations, foreign governments or multi-lateral organizations
• Exceptional writing and proofreading skills; ability to translate technical information into lay language; experience in developing and organizing proposals for varying audiences
• Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills; a demonstrated ability to diplomatically and effectively guide peers and directors though strategy conception to concrete proposed deliverables focused on impact at global scale
• Ability to take initiative, work independently, and be flexible on changing priorities
• Experience working in international team environment a plus; must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, with a diverse staff, across multiple time zones, and within tight and often parallel deadlines
• Understanding of compliance requirements of Indonesia’s NGO law in relation to fundraising activities.  
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally. 
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, SharePoint and Salesforce a plus.
