Anaemia among adolescent girls is one of
key public health problems in Indonesia. According to the Riskesdas 2013, the
prevalence of anemia among adolescent girls and women of reproductive age (15
to 24 years) in Indonesia was 18.4%. Meanwhile, some studies indicate higher
data (anemia is estimated to be 40%-50% in adolescent girls) in some area 1.
Anemia is first cause of Disability Adjusted Life-Year among the adolescent
girls, hindering them to actively participate in school, hence reaching their
full potential. Compared to adolescent boys, adolescent girls are more prone to
anaemia due to iron loss during menstruation cycle and inadequate iron-rich
diet intake. Accordingly, to prevent anaemia in adolescent girls, Nutrition
International (NI) has been supporting Ministry of Health (MOH) since 2017 to
implement Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFAS) programs in Indonesia.
Due
to the pandemic regular monitoring and reporting processes of the WIFAS
program were also adversely affected. Consequently, multiple virtual
applications applications (including CERIA, SIGIZI, SIMPATI, Google form
and WhatsApp) were developed and utilized to collect and reporting the
coverage and consumption data. CERIA and SIGIZI were developed by
Ministry of Health to for nutrition services' reporting including WIFA
program, however, these systems are not yet streamlined. Complexities
and non-alignment of these various strategies and application that have
been utilized for WIFA supplementation program will negatively affect
the program performance report, such as under reporting of coverage
data, errors in gathered data, incomplete data, etc.
School
have started to gradually re-open since July 2021 with hybrid
modalities, extra precautions to minimize C-19 infections, and limit
students' attendance. As mentioned above, WIFA supplementation is
ongoing through various platforms, including Puskesmas and community
level. Hence, there is a need to align and streamline monitoring and
reporting processes across all these platforms and ensure commitment,
support, and collaboration among four key stakeholders (MOH, MOEd, MOHA
and MORA) and UKS/M to plan, implement, monitor, supervise and report on
the WIFAS program.
With the above context, NI will facilitate
a dialogue session at national level to discuss with multi-stakeholders the
ongoing issues, propose changes and request corresponding updates in national
guidelines, policies, resources on WIFAS program within COVID/post-COVID
context.
