Dear Sir/Madam,
As a federal enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.
GIZ has been supporting the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) over several years within the Forestry sector and initiated the development of forest management units (FMUs) as permanent local management organizations. Forest Management Unit (FMU) is a public service provider for local communities, a permanent management entity and an operational unit of a manageable and controllable size of forest under the responsibility of national and subnational governments. Its size varies from 4,500 ha to 800,000 ha, but on average is about 133,000 ha. By 2021, 697 FMUs have been legally established and most of them are operational. One core mandate of the FMUs was and is support and facilitation of community forestry schemes (CBFM) coordinated with the social forestry regional branches (PSKL) of the MoEF. Social forestry initiatives make steady progress and different CBFM models have been introduced all over Indonesia. Local institutions for village forest development in communities in and around FMUs have been strengthened by awareness raising, training and legal advice.
