GIZ Indonesia for the Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia (CASE) Project: Trainee (to Support RE & EE upscale activities for CASE, and to support the organization on ETTG)

 

GIZ is currently implementing a program, funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), called “Clean, Affordable, and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia“ (CASE), The programme “Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia” (CASE) aims to drive change in the power sector in South East Asia (SEA) towards increased ambitions with regards to climate change. It focuses on the four main SEA countries Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam and includes both national and regional activities. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

Anchored in Indonesia with the political partner “Ministry of National Development Planning” (Bappenas) and implemented by GIZ Indonesia and Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) with further support of international partners Agora Energiewende and New Climate Institute, CASE will propose evidence-based solutions to the challenges met by decision-makers in the design and implementation of the energy system of the future and build societal support around those solutions. A joint fact-finding approach will be applied, involving expert analysis and dialogue to work towards consensus by narrowing areas of disagreement. The project is being implemented between March 2020 and February 2024.

The project objective is to be achieved through three areas of intervention, clustered in three outputs:

·     Output I: Research and Evidence: The evidence base for an energy transition in SEA is improved.

·     Output II: Transparency and Mapping: Transparency and coordination of activities related to energy transition is strengthened to maximize synergies.

·     Output III: Dialogue (non-energy sector): The dialogue on energy transition within government (and public) bodies is improved.

·     Output IV: Technical Assistance (energy sector): Capacities of key energy sector stakeholders on energy transition are strengthened.

·     Output V: Promoting public discourse: A public discourse on energy transition is established.

We are seeking 1 (one) qualified Indonesian candidate for the following position:

 Trainee

(to support RE & EE upscale activities for CASE, and to support the organization on ETTG)

 

  1. Responsibilities

The traineeship is to support the implementation of CASE programme activities mainly on Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency upscale topic, and support other thematic areas under CASE (Decarbonization & LTES) .The traineeship program will provide benefits to deepen the trainee’s knowledge on Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency and practical experience on the working environment in international cooperation. It can also broaden his/her understanding on energy transition in Indonesia and the ASEAN region.

Under direct supervision of Advisor of Energy Policy for CASE, the trainee shall support in the preparation and implementation of CASE programme activities in coordination with Advisors and CASE consortium (IESR, Bappenas, and regional team), namely:

  • Activities to support the implementation of the programme outputs with focus on Renewable Energy (RE) & Energy Efficiency (EE) topic, namely:
    • Output I: Research and Evidence: The evidence base for an energy transition in SEA is improved.
    • Output II: Transparency and Mapping: Transparency and coordination of activities related to energy transition is strengthened to maximize synergies.
    • Output III: Dialogue (non-energy sector): The dialogue on energy transition within government (and public) bodies is improved.
    • Output IV:  Technical Assistance (energy sector): Capacities of key energy sector stakeholders on energy transition are strengthened.
  • Activities’ monitoring and evaluation, including gender analysis and post-events’ evaluation

On top of that the trainee shall also support the organisation of the internal Energy Transition Thematic group which the main activity is providing knowledge sharing on energy transition topic across different Thematic Focal Area within GIZ.

 

  1. Tasks

 

The Trainee will perform the following tasks:

  • Support in preparation and implementation of RE & EE upscale activities, such as capacity development on solar PV RMS for regional government, capacity development on RE grid integration, capacity development for EE network and other upcoming activities.
  • Support in the development of knowledge products (such as fact sheets, policy briefs, reports, etc.) related to energy transition topics by compiling data and information.
  • Assist the RE & EE team to conduct monitoring and analysis of RE & EE energy policy development in Indonesia
  • Assist the RE & EE team in updating relevant data, studies, and supporting documents for activity implementation as well as collaborating with other GIZ projects or other donors.
  • Supporting the RE & EE team in preparing relevant materials (e.g. power-point, factsheet or brochures) for presentation, workshops, training, and other events
  • Support the RE & EE team in the monitoring and evaluation processes based on the performance of project outputs, indicators, and activity milestones
  • Supporting the team in preparing working documents for CASE events, participate in the planning and organization process, and conduct the post event’s evaluation, analysis and compilation (e.g. feedback results, gender composition, attendance list, or other related documents)
  • Assist the team in performing administrative duties and other tasks as advised or agreed.
  • Stay abreast of the developments in global and Indonesian approaches for renewable energy, in particular RE grid integration and energy transition
  • Have regular discussion and coordination with the CASE team, as needed.
  • Under the ETTG coordinator, assist the organization of the GIZ internal Energy Transition Thematic Group (ETTG) including preparation of meetings, presentations and documents (based on research), post event knowledge product, as well as coordination and outreach to the group members

 

C.  Required qualifications, competences, and experience

Formal Education

Bachelor’s Degree or final year master’s student in environmental engineering/science, economics or energy economics/policy, climate change, sustainable energy engineering, or other relevant fields

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Basic knowledge and familiarity on sustainable energy and environmental issues, particularly in Indonesia
  • Prior experience in developing knowledge products, especially for policy analysis, and in managing capacity development/trainings will be an advantage
  • Experience in conducting desk research, working on event management, and working on data analysis will be an advantage
  • Good communication, organisational and project management skills
  • Good command of Ms. Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Experience with picture editing software/application is an advantage
  • Proficiency in English and excellent writing skills
  • Ability to work in a team and to adapt to an international working environment.

Duty Station: Jakarta
Working Hours: 5 working days per week, 8 working hours per day
Expected Joining Date:  a.s.a.p.
Period of Traineeship: 6 months
