the establishment of Community Conservation Agreements (CCA) for Village Nature
Conservation in South Tapanuli regency, North Sumatra Province
Conservation International, an
international non-governmental organization is now looking for partners to
support and facilitate the establishment of Community Conservation Agreements
(CCA) for Village Nature Conservation in Mandailing Natal regency, North
Sumatra Province
Conservation International is
implementing the Sustainable Landscapes Partnership in North Sumatra,
Indonesia, a five-year partnership with USAID and the Walton Family
Foundation. The goal of the program is
to address global climate change and contribute to Indonesia’s economic growth,
while protecting its critically threatened habitats through public and private
philanthropic funding into an innovative facility (SLP). CI has targeted this work to three regencies
of North Sumatra: Mandailing Natal, Tapanuli Selatan and Tapanuli Utara
Districts.
In the map of priority areas of
forest in Sumatra, Batang Toru forest with an area of 133.841 hectares of
forests have high biodiversity as well as the catchment area for about 3
million people in Tapanuli South, Central Tapanuli and North Tapanuli. Batang
Toru forest is habitat for the Sumatra Orangutan, Honey Bear, Sumatran Tiger
and Tapir. This forest is also the habitat for many species of birds, including
Kuau birds.
Hence the importance of the
Batang Toru Forest for the welfare of society and biodiversity, then the
protection, improvement and sustainable forest management must be done in order
to always provide a benefit to society and the environment while maintaining
services. One strategy for this effort is to increase the participation of
local communities in managing the Batang Toru forest through the development
and implementation of CCA. This is in line with mission CI Indonesia who wants
to preserve the Batang Toru Forest. Through the SLP program, CI Indonesia is to
give support to facilitate the community in South Tapanuli which borders the
Batang Toru Forest to develop CCA and its implementation..
As one of the strategies to
protect and support the sustainable use of forest areas in this district SLP
proposes to develop the agreement Community for Conservation of Natural Capital
in the village or in the English term is a Community Conservation Agreement
(CCA).
The agreement Village Community
for Conservation of Nature (KMKAD/CCA) is a written agreement village community
to protect, preserve and utilize natural resources with sustainable. CCA or KMKAD consists of a narrative written
agreement and maps / pictures / other supporting data and approved by the
village community, in term of the capital for the conservation of nature. CCA or KMKAD aims to enhance the role and
participation of communities to conserve forests and other important resources
for the welfare of the community. CCA or
KMKAD can also be used for planning of village development and village
development policies.
