I.
Background
The United Nations Entity for Gender
Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) was established by General
Assembly resolution 64/289 of 2 July 2010 on system-wide coherence with the
mandate to assist Member States and the United Nations system to progress more
effectively and efficiently towards the goal of achieving gender equality and
the empowerment of women. Ending violence against women is one of the thematic
priorities of the UN Women. UN Women has been providing support to the state
parties and civil society organizations in Indonesia to for better
implementation of legislations, as well as support to raise awareness on
prevention of violence against women.
The qualitative research study, “The Gender Politics of Social
Movement and Violence Prevention: Men and violence against women movement in
Indonesia” was developed as one component of
the Partners for Prevention (P4P) research initiative to develop a deeper
understanding of masculinities and their connections to gender-based violence in
order to inform evidence-based responses to violence prevention in countries
across the Asia Pacific Region.
The research study to set a
foundation of both knowledge and relationships on which to build more effective
work engaging social movements in efforts to prevent gender-based violence
through progressive public policy. The research was intended to deepen understanding
of the changes in gender practices and cultures within such movements that will
serve to foster the development of such public policy in Indonesia.
In order to increase the
readership of the study, that was originally written in English, to Indonesian
readers, UN Women in Indonesia seeks an experience translator for this
task.
II.
Objectives
of the Assignment
The
objective of this consultancy is to provide accurate translation of the study ensuring
that the study’s accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with technical
concept of the research in accordance with United Nations standards, policy and
practice are in place.
III.
Scope
of Work/Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of Country Manager, a.i, and in close consultation
with the National Programme Officer on EVAW, the Consultant will perform the following
tasks:
- Translate the final draft of research study “The Gender Politics of Social Movement and Violence Prevention: Men and violence against women movement in Indonesia” from English into Bahasa Indonesia (approximately 52 pages).
- Finalize the translation following the feedback from UN Women Indonesia.

Duration
of the Assignment
The total duration
of the assignment is within the period of 19 January to 27 February 2015.

Deliverables
Final deliverable
is the accurate and cohesive Bahasa Indonesia translation of “The Gender Politics of Social Movement and
Violence Prevention: Men and violence against women movement in Indonesia”.

Upon
receipt of the final deliverable and prior to the payment of the instalment,

Performance Evaluation
Consultant’s performance will be evaluated based on: timeliness,
responsibility, initiative, communication, accuracy, and quality of the
products delivered.
VIII.
Required
experience and qualifications
The consultant should fulfill the following
requirements:
Education
Master’s
degree or an advanced degree in Indonesian studies, gender and women’s studies,
social science, political science, or any related field.
Experience
1.
A minimum of 5 years professional experience in
translation of research and publication, preferably on politics, gender equality
and women’s issues in Indonesia
2.
Strong background in provision of
editorial service and communications
3.
Familiarity with terminologies and
concepts of gender equality in English and preferably in Bahasa Indonesia
4.
Knowledge of the UN and international
organization’s standards for communication and knowledge products, experience
in involving as writer, co-writer and/or editor in international publication on
Indonesia is an advantage
Language and other skills
- Perfect command of English, which must be the consultant’s main/native language
- Solid writing and analytical abilities with sensitivity to nuance and context
