Background
A part of the Kelola Sendang project landscapes are peatlands already
cultivated for various purposes, such as industrial plantation forests
and oil palm plantations and carbon sequestration and storage. In
addition, the area of peatland is also used by the community for
cultivation activities. The sustainability of peatland management is
strongly influenced by the water system, especially the water level in
accordance with the needs of each management unit. The dynamics of water
flow in the canal flowing in a hydrological area of peat (KHG) is
strongly influenced by the management of the peat dome which is a water
reservoir and water regulator. In addition, the construction of canals
also affects the sustainability of peatlands. Canals created by cutting
the contours will lead to water draining that accelerates subsidence and
drought, leaving peat at high risk of burning.
In the future, the water demand in peatlands will be an important issue
that should be addressed by various parties as it may create a conflict
of interest between its users, As part of the solution for land fire
control and sustainable peatland management, KS encourages integrated
water management system in KHG S. Merang - S. Ngirawan as a model,
taking into consideration the diversity of peatland uses, carbon pools
and storage areas, plantations , oil palm plantations and community
cultivation areas.
