USAID BIJAK Vacancy: Communications Associate based in Jakarta


USAID BIJAK seeks applications for an Communications Associate with experience performing environment-focused communications activities. USAID BIJAK (Bangun Indonesia untuk Jaga Alam demi Keberlanjutan) is a Jakarta-based, five-year project implemented by Chemonics International in collaborations with Kemitraan and Wildlife Conservation Society.

OVERVIEW
Launched in 2016, USAID BIJAK brings to bear leading technical expertise in the areas of forestry, conservation area management, and wildlife protection to help inform and encourage Indonesian reform efforts that conserve valuable marine and terrestrial biodiversity and reduce GHG emissions. To accomplish this, BIJAK works at the national level, with a range of stakeholders, to improve the management of forests and conservation areas, and strengthen protections for marine and terrestrial wildlife threatened by illegal or unsustainable trade.
As a facilitator and supporter of change, BIJAK works with Indonesian policymakers, civil society organizations, private sector entities, research institutions, and other stakeholders to impact the following:

  • Number of national level laws, policies, regulations, decrees, procedures, or fiscal and budgetary practices reformed, revised, adopted and/or applied with USG assistance in order to reduce GHG emissions, reduce wildlife trafficking, and conserve valuable terrestrial and marine biodiversity. 
  • Improved capacity and willingness of Indonesian institutions and organizations to address biodiversity conservation, especially wildlife trafficking, and climate change as a result of USG assistance.
  • Number of businesses engaged in extensive land-use practices, especially palm oil, developing green business practices and sharing them widely with others in their industry with USG assistance. 
  • Amount of investment leveraged in USD from private and public sources for biodiversity conservation and/or climate change as a result of USG assistance.
  • Public opinion and behaviors changed as a result of advocacy campaigns developed and implemented with USG to support targeted terrestrial and marine biodiversity conservation and low carbon development issues. 
  • Model(s) for successful low emissions development and forest conservation developed and shared with USG assistance at all levels of government and with other key stakeholders. 
In Year 2, BIJAK integrated its four programmatic components into two technical themes.. These themes serve as the framework for the project’s work moving forward:
  • Technical Theme 1 (TT1) - Improving Management of Conservation Areas and Forests
  • Technical Theme 2 (TT2) - Increasing Protection of Key Species

OBJECTIVE
The Communications Associate will work closely with the Communications Manager to advance the project’s communications program. Based in Jakarta, the Communications Associate will assist in the management of all communications for BIJAK’s operations, as well as work closely with the Project Management Unit (PMU) team in Washington DC. The position involves a broad scope of work, from content development, event planning and database management to public relations and press management.

RESPONSIBILITIES includebut are not limited to:
  • Provide communications support to the Communications Manager in developing a range of products including but not limited to weekly brief news items (“bullets”) for USAID, quarterly and annual reports, success stories, project newsletters, fact sheets, and other products as specified in the communications plan.
  • Manage and maintain project website, updating content regularly and responding to requests and queries.
  • Manage and maintain BIJAK’s social media accounts, including Facebook and potentially others that may include Twitter, Instagram, and/or YouTube. Refresh posts on the various platforms in a timely manner in alignment with the Social Media Strategy. Maintain regular engagement with followers as well as social media outlets of partner organizations and CSOs.  
  • Edit and catalog BIJAK research reports, policy briefs, assessments, survey results, images, videos, and other materials and deliverables from the project technical team. Work with others on the team as necessary to ensure materials are of high quality, compliant with USAID branding guidelines, and camera ready for appropriate dissemination (including USAID’s Development Exchange Clearinghouse [DEC]).
  • Ensure brand consistency (visual and textual representation) in alignment with USAID branding guidelines across all channels, platforms and products.
  • Support graphic design and development of communications materials.
  • Film and edit short videos regarding BIJAK’s work for distribution on the project’s social media platforms.
  • Gather materials for success stories from staff and local partners, develop initial drafts and follow up when required.
  • Increase BIJAK’s visibility by developing strong relationships with the media and providing assistance in the production of op-eds, media advisories and press releases.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • A bachelor degree (S1) from the faculty of communications (journalism, public relations, marketing, etc.) with a minimum of three years of practical experience in communications industry.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong writing skills in both Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • Some experience working with photo and video editing software, database programs and PowerPoint
  • Experience organizing events and managing local media.
  • Proficient in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • Strong film-making, video editing, photography, photo editing and graphic design skills.
  • Highly proficient in PowerPoint and other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience in international development, particularly USAID sponsored projects.
  • Ability to multitask and work on competing priorities under tight deadlines and with great attention to detail.
