Nutrition International (previously Micronutrient Initiative, MI)
is an international Non-Government Organization (NGO) dedicated to ensuring
that the world’s most vulnerable – especially women and children in developing
countries – get the vitamins and minerals they need to survive and thrive.
With headquarters in Ottawa, Canada MI maintains regional offices in New Delhi,
India and Nairobi, Kenya that manage our country offices in Asia and Africa..
Nutrition International (NI) is
implementing a MITRA Youth, a project supporting Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation
(WIFAS) for prevention and reduction of Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) among
school-going adolescent girls, in selected districts in two provinces of
Indonesia: East Java and East Nusa Tenggara
which is funded by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
Australia.
Based on NI’s experience on WIFAS
program among school adolescent girls in the demonstration districts (Cimahi
and Purwakarta), and formative research that will be conducted in East Java and
East Nusa Tenggara province, a Behavior Change Intervention (BCI) strategy will
be reviewed and modified following the context of these two provinces. The BCI strategy
will identify appropriate messages and channels for encouraging behavior change
amongst adolescent school girls and their supporting groups including parents,
teachers and health staff. The BCI strategy developed in the demonstration
districts will be contextualized and modified based on formative research
findings and stakeholder consultations. The set of communication materials
developed earlier will be pre-tested and adapted to make them relevant to the
socio-cultural context in these East Java and East Nusa Tengara.
The BCI strategy will include
strategies to promote acceptance and consumption of IFA tablets as well as
consumption of affordable iron rich food with a focus on available animal
source food by adolescent girls. In consultation with MoH and other
stakeholders, the development/modification of existing communication materials,
to be used by the health staff, teachers, and providers, will be also
undertaken It is expected that use of an appropriate BCI strategy and
supporting BCI interventions will build capacity of health staff and teachers
for creating awareness on the benefits of the WIFAS and nutrition education to
school-going adolescent girls and parents. It will also provide knowledge and
skill for health staff and teachers for effective counselling to school-going
adolescent girls and proper administration of the intervention.
NI is now seeking a consultant to undertake review of
existing BCI plan developed for the demonstration project and modify on the
basis of recommendations for BCI strategy for East Java and East Nusa Tenggara.
