Project 1000
Islands – Renewable Energy for Electrification program – REEP work
closely to Indonesia electricity sector, especially in local electricity
grids on islands . The
Indonesian electricity sector is not only experiencing steadily rising
demand (7 per cent per year) but is also grappling with a low
electrification rate, frequent power failures, extensive use of
conventional fuels for electricity generation, heavy dependence on oil
imports, and limited involvement of private-sector stakeholders in power
production. As a country of numerous islands, many parts of Indonesia
are either entirely without electricity or else reliant on local
electricity grids. These grids are not interconnected and are usually
fed by expensive-to-run diesel generators. In such situations, renewable
energies (RE) are a cost-effective alternative.
